Fall is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. Pumpkin muffins and Dunkin’ Donuts pumpkin coffee and cooler weather all work together to make me happy. Here are some of my favorite things!
First, some things to watch:
I recently started watching Abbott Elementary on ABC, and it is so funny. Filmed in the same style as The Office, it follows teachers at a low-income school. This show is clever and funny and relatively clean since it’s on “regular” tv. I think you’ll enjoy it if you’re looking for something to watch this fall.
The U.S. and the Holocaust Episode 1 on PBS. Ok, I heard about this documentary series from Jamie B Golden on The Popcast with Knox and Jamie and decided to give it a go. Listen, this docuseries is so good. But it’s going to make you really mad at everyone who ever taught you history or ever wrote a history book because apparently, lots of things we were taught growing up weren’t exactly true. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this series if you watch. Admittedly, I’ve only watched episode 1…
Next, some things to read:
I recently read Everything Sad is Untrue, a memoir by Daniel Nayeri. This book, written from the perspective of a 12-year old Iranian immigrant, was humorous yet poignant. I always love reading about other cultures so I particularly loved this book. I think your older elementary kids would love it just as much as you would!
Of course I can’t leave out my beloved John Eldredge, author of my favorite book, Walking with God. Well, I’m currently reading another of his books, Get Your Life Back, and it’s refreshing in a slow, take-your-time kind of way. I’m learning to breathe deeply, taking in God’s word, His beauty that surrounds us. If you’re needing a change of pace, this might be just the book for you.
Here are a couple podcasts to listen to:
I hate to break it to you, but these two podcast recommendations are both pretty heavy. But they made a huge impact on me this month so I want you to give them a try.
First, this episode of The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey. This episode was all about the Invisible Girl Project. I admit that I’d never heard of this organization until listening to the podcast but it immediately grabbed my attention. Mostly because it’s all about saving girls in India – my heart! The statistics stated in this episode were both staggering and heartbreaking. Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
And now, Episode 91 of Hey! It’s the Luskos. On this episode, Levi and Jennie interview country music star Granger Smith and his wife Amber about the death of their son River. So many emotions run through this episode but also lots of wisdom and encouragement. I think you’ll be encouraged for sure!
And lastly, a fall treat!
I’m sure everyone has made these easy pumpkin muffins by now, but if not, give them a try. I sometimes add a little individual cup of applesauce just for the heck of it, but you certainly don’t have to. My kids devour these muffins and I often have them when guests come over because they’re always a hit!
