I awake each morning before 5:00 and stumble toward the kitchen, searching for coffee. As I enter the living room, I’m greeted by the glow of our Christmas tree, set on a timer to turn on in the early morning hours. It’s a beautiful reminder of this season, that Jesus is the light of the world, and I’ll miss the warmth and coziness it provides once the darkness of January is upon us.
How do we keep the coziness, the assurance, the reminder of Jesus’ light shining throughout the year when the world seems heavy?
I read a quote a few days ago that said, “Each of us is an innkeeper who decides if there is room for Jesus.”
And I think about that innkeeper two thousand years ago. Did he know he was turning away the mother of the Savior of the world? Would he have made room if he’d known?
We don’t have the option of not knowing. Because we know who Jesus is. If you’re anything like I am, you’ve heard the stories and seen the passion plays. You know Jesus.
But, as I look around at the world, especially at the global church, I think about my own life. Am I the innkeeper? Am I truly making room for Jesus?
I read my Bible every day.
I pray.
I try to teach my kids about the goodness of God.
But sometimes I’m too tired or worn out to do more.
Sometimes, I scroll my phone instead of talking to God.
Sometimes, I let anger creep in instead of letting the peace of Jesus fill my heart.
Am I truly making room for Jesus?
Are you?
As Christmas approaches this week, let’s take time to seek Him. In the hustle and bustle of final Christmas preparations, let’s not forget why we celebrate. Find a quiet moment and ask Him to forgive you when you don’t put Him before all things. And ask for wisdom to know how to do just that.
