God Over the Nations

Tomorrow, all across the United States, we will celebrate the birth of America. For so many, the 4th of July represents freedom and sacrifice. It’s a day of fun and fireworks and days at the lake and barbecues and family gatherings.

Yet right now, our country is more divided than ever. Democrats versus Republicans, race pitted against race, liberals versus conservatives.

It’s disheartening.

I recently saw an advertisement for a super cute t-shirt.

At first, I was confused by its message. (Yes, I know I’m a little slow – don’t judge.)

Eventually, I did realize it was referencing the Pledge of Allegiance – “One Nation Under God,” but my first thought upon seeing the shirt was “God is always above the nation.”

And maybe that’s what we should think when we hear “One Nation Under God.”

Maybe we should be putting God above our own country. Our own politics.

So many of us care more about our political party than we do about our place in God’s Kingdom. And I totally get it – these are scary times we’re living in.

But instead of focusing on how we voted or who is in the White House or what Congress is voting on next, maybe we should be falling to our knees in prayer, seeking the Lord in all things.

All things.

  • Parenting
  • Being a good spouse
  • Where we live
  • How we serve our church and community
  • Our jobs
  • Friendships
  • Ministry
  • Our plans for the day
  • Vacations

All things.

I’m grateful to live in a country where we experience countless freedoms. And being in a military town only heightens my gratitude.

But mostly, I’m grateful for a Savior who died a terrible death upon a cross so that I could live a beautiful life, following after Him.

Enjoy your 4th of July holiday. I know that I will.

But don’t forget that God is above all. Above every nation and tribe. He is King of Kings and Lord of lords. And we should praise Him all the days of our lives.
