Many afternoons my husband comes home to chaos. He steps over toys and picks up food crumbs from the floor. I feel sure he’s wondering, “What did you do today?” although he’s never actually asked. (Or maybe I should say – he hasn’t asked in several years.)
Yet, I find myself trying to justify the mess.
What did I do today?
Today I took the toddler to the potty more times than I care to admit.
Today I kept said toddler from peeing all over furniture and hardwood floors and carpets.
Today I navigated the moody emotions of a teen.
Today I encouraged said teen and watched her face light up in a smile.
Today I helped my son play an online game. And I’m not a gamer so it’s not my favorite thing.
Today I also ensured said son was wearing his headgear the recommended number of hours.
Today I listened to the 8-year old’s never-ending story about her infatuation with a certain movie star. Without rolling my eyes.
Today I helped said 8-year old practice her piano. For the love. (How did my mom do this without losing her mind?)
Today I made breakfast for our out of town guest and lunch for our children.
Today I washed and folded 5 loads of laundry.
Today I researched scholarships our senior might be eligible for.
Today I refereed too many fights and arguments to count.
Today I helped my children with their Bible studies.
Today I read a million and one children’s books.
Today I rocked a toddler to sleep.
Today I allowed my kids to watch too much TV and play video games for way too long.
Today I laid down for 30 whole minutes.
Today I meal-planned for the week and ordered groceries online.
Today I kept four little humans alive.
That’s what I did today.
Moms, you have a hard job, one that many people don’t understand. Thankfully, my husband sees what needs to be done around the house and he jumps in to help. But don’t beat yourself up if there are toys strewn about your living room and it’s been four days since you’ve washed your hair. You are doing kingdom work with the little people who live in your house. So be kind to yourself. (And maybe take a nap once in a while).
And when you mess up (because there will be hard days), remember that God is faithful and He gives new mercies every morning.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
