Do you remember that old Shania Twain song, “That Don’t Impress Me Much?” For some reason, the chorus to that song has been ringing in my head for days.
It might have something to do with the fact that I’ve realized lately just how unimpressive I am to my kids.
In fact, I think I’m way more impressive than I actually am.
Most nights, I sing Jillienne to sleep like I’m auditioning for American Idol. She is not impressed.
Sometimes I like to dance in the kitchen while cooking. Vivienne is not impressed.
Jonah loves jokes so I often tell him my latest and greatest. He’s usually not impressed.
I attempt to write clever comments on Brienne’s instagram. And guess what? She’s not impressed.
When my kids are less than impressed with me, it bruises my ego. Wouldn’t you feel the same way? I want to be the young, cool mom, but those days are over.
Actually, I don’t think those days ever existed. Ha!
But just because I’m not as impressive as I want to be, there are still things I want to impress upon my kids:
- We should serve others and put their needs ahead of our own
- Kindness matters; skin color doesn’t
- Jesus is the only thing we truly need
There are other things I want my kids to learn, but, in the midst of sibling rivalry and quarantine and racial unrest, those three have risen to the top of the list lately.
What about you? What are you trying to teach your children right now?
