I don’t know about all of you, but I am obsessed with all things royal. Maybe it started when I was a little girl, watching Cinderella and dreaming of a handsome prince who would ride in on his white horse and sweep me off my feet, carrying me away to live happily ever after in his beautiful palace.
As I grew up, I began to realize that my odds of finding real-life royalty were pretty slim. I mean, there are only so many actual princes in the world. (And don’t take this the wrong way, because I totally did find my knight-in-shining-armor. Just instead of a horse-drawn carriage, he swept me away in his Ford truck. Ha!)
I have followed the marriage of Princess Diana and Charles, Diana’s untimely death, and I’ve followed her boys as they’ve become men. Plus, I’ve watched The Crown, so the whole royal family feel like my people now.
And with the recent wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, girls all over America have begun to realize that perhaps their royal dreams really could come true.
And Saturday morning in our home, Vivienne suddenly began to realize that she could grow up to be an actual princess. If she can find a prince to marry.
As she watched the beautiful wedding ceremony with me, she began asking questions as I explained that the bride was just a normal girl who was now going to be a princess.
How did she meet the prince?
Where can I meet a prince?
Why didn’t you marry a prince?
Was your wedding on television too?
I could almost see the wheels turning in Vivi’s little head as she connived a way to meet and marry a prince. Obsession is an understatement with this one. And later in the day, she put on one of her princess costumes and pretended to walk down the aisle toward her prince, instructing me to carry her train.
I guess she gets it honestly though. What little girl doesn’t want to grow up and marry a prince who can make all her dreams come true?
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone came in on their white horse, swept us off our feet, and rescued us from our mundane lives?
But the reality is, there is no one who can make all your dreams come true. And it isn’t fair to expect our husbands (or anyone else in our lives, for that matter) to be our dream-maker.
The only person who can sweep in and rescue us is Jesus. But He did even more than that – He actually gave up His very life for you. And for me. He took all of our sins upon Himself so that we could be saved. And three days later He rose from the grave, conquering death forever.
I love that the gospel of Jesus Christ was preached during the Royal Wedding. It makes me happy to know that millions of people around the world heard the Truth of Christ’s love.
Because, truly, Jesus is the only one who can rescue us from our mundane. Not a man you may meet in your hometown. Not even a prince from the other side of the world.
Only Jesus can make our dreams come true. Only He can provide fulfillment and acceptance 100% of the time.
Today, as the newly married royal couple begins their lives together, I pray that they will come to a saving knowledge of the grace of Jesus. I pray for their happiness and for their marriage to remain strong amidst the trials that are sure to come.
And frankly, I pray that for all of us.
