My Challenge to You on the Eve of the Election

If you are a mom, you may feel as if you spend most of your time acting as a referee between your kids. You, like me, are probably constantly putting out fires your little angels leave in their wakes.

fire

My little kids fight over everything:

who is going to open the door;

who is going to hold the door open;

who is going to open the garage;

who gets to play with the remote control car;

who will get the first bath;

who will pick the tv show.

I could go on and on but I’ll spare you. I think you get the picture…

Some days I have serious doubts that I will be able to put out all the fires started by these precious little ones who live in my house.

The upcoming election (tomorrow!) is a fire that is currently burning in our nation. (My spell check just substituted “boring” for “burning” and I actually have to agree with it. sigh…)

Anyway, I am absolutely sure that I cannot put out this fire of lies, hurts, disappointments, name-calling, and everything else we’ve seen play out on the national stage the last several months.

And you know what? It’s not my job to put out that fire.

I know lots of you have already voted. So now, my job, and yours, is to pray for our nation. To pray for our leaders – that they may have wisdom and that if they don’t already, that they would come to have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

Here is what I know. Many people are fighting and arguing over this election. Friendships have been lost and families have been torn apart. The enemy is at work everywhere we turn. He wants to tear us up from within.

But we don’t have to allow the enemy to do any more damage than he’s already done.

Because ultimately, God is in control. My God, the Creator of the universe, is on the throne. And He will still be on the throne Wednesday after the elections are (hopefully) over.

2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us to humble ourselves, seek God’s face, and pray for our country.

So today, on the eve of the election, I challenge you to pray. Be diligent in praying over the next 24 hours. But I don’t want us to stop praying when the election is over.

Let’s continue to pray every day for our leaders. Pray for their wisdom and courage to make hard decisions.

And remember that God is God, He is still on His throne, and He has our nation in His hands.
